Joseph Merk was one of the most outstanding cellists in Vienna in the first half of the 19th century. Although Beethoven's "Triple Concerto" was not originally written for him, he established its important status through his performances, and Chopin dedicated the "Introduction et Polonaise brillante" to it. But Merk was also considered an excellent composer for his own instrument. With his "Fleurs d'Italie", for example, he created an impressive series of instrumental episodes, for which he was inspired by motifs from operas by Donizetti and Verdi. The "Valses brillantes" close the gap, in classical virtuoso manner, between Schubert's Dances for Piano and the large-scale gesture of Johann Strauss's father.
