It is not known why Haydn preferred the flute to the violin in these trios. Perhaps he wanted to accommodate English or even aristocratic taste for this instrument. Whatever the reason - the use of a flute in no way implies a diminution of his extravagant resourcefulness; Haydn's witty composing is contagious as always.
The trios in D major and G major end with a virtuoso firework display, the F major work differs clearly from the two in that it gives equal weight to seriousness and cheerfulness in its rather large-format arrangement.
