Paul Daniel conducts the English Northern Philharmonia in electrifying performances of this varied group of orchestral works. As before he is splendid at interpreting Walton’s jazzy syncopations with the right degree of freedom. Following the composer’s own suggestion, the original version of the Sinfonia concertante is preferred to the revision, fuller and more brilliant. The performance is excellent , despite the placing of the soloist, Peter Donohoe, too far forward. Daniel draws playing both warm and scintillating from the orchestra in the Hindemith Variations—no finer version exists—while the March and the Spitfire music hit home all the harder through Daniel’s refusal to dawdle. • Penguin Guide, January 2009
