The Celtic Mass is an epic tale through word and sound. It takes the listener firmly grounded in the present on a journey through mankind’s past through an Irish lens. Visible in each movement are musical equivalents of soaring landscapes and beat by beat throughout time waves lap at island shores. Michael McGlynn’s unique choral writing and harmonic palette make me long for a place I have never been, through the familiar genre of the Mass. The very living texture of his music creates images of vines and living moss covering ancient blocks of stone and blankets of flowers covering stony slopes.
