In 1940 Messiaen, the violinist Jean le Boulaire, the cellist Étienne Pasquier and the clarinettist Henri Akoka met as members of a military orchestra obliged to military service. Soon they were taken prisoner of war in Germany and were interned in an interim camp in which terrible conditions prevailed. The conception of the quartet was condensed into hunger fantasies. In the prison camp in Görlitz, where the musicians were finally transferred to, they met Captain Karl Albert Brüll, a lawyer and opponent of Nazi rule in civil life, who became a "saving angel" for many Jews among the prisoners of war, including Henri Akoka. Brüll was an enthusiastic music lover, provided paper, ink and a workroom in which Messiaen could put his work to paper. • "There will be no more time" - These words from the Revelation of John inspired the creation of this famous quartet for piano, violin, cello and clarinet. On the occasion of the composer's 100th birthday, Vincent Coq, Jean-Marc Philipps-Varjabédian and Raphaël Pidoux invited Pascal Moraguès to record this great classic of the 20th century with tchem.
