opis
In the string quintets, the Talich Quartet with second violist Karel Rehak display the same attributes as in their great Beethoven cycle. Technical skill, appropriate tempi and interpretive depth (welcome lack of superficiality). The latter is especially true when most necessary: the double dose of sorrow in the Adagios of the third movement and introduction to the fourth movement of the G Minor Quuntet, K516; the third movement Andante of the C major quintet, K515, and the second movement Adagio of the D Major quintet, k593, and most of the C Minor Quintet, k406. These are among Mozart's most profound and poetic movements for strings and in general. Quicker music is equally good, e.g the spirited outer movements of k614 and the finales of k 515 and k593. The lone (relative) disappointment is the Clarinet Quintet with Bohuslav Zahradnik. He is proficient technically but rather pallid-notably in the final two movements. I much prefer George Pieterson/Grumiaux Ensemble/Philips and Gervase de Peyer/Amadeus Quaret/BBV.
