opis
When Charles Burney made his way to Vienna in 1772, he asked what great musicians the city had to offer in addition to Hasse, Gluck, and Wagenseil – so high was the reputation of the court composer and court keyboard master Georg Christoph Wagenseil during his lifetime. Unfortunately, such is no longer the case today. Wagenseil was certainly the most important representative of Viennese music culture prior to the great age of Viennese classicism. As the personal music teacher of Empress Maria Theresia, he exerted formative stylistic influence on court musical taste. In London and Paris too his works – above all his symphonies – were extraordinarily esteemed and published with success. Our second CD with symphonies by Wagenseil again presents six magnificent Storm and Stress works and reveals this Viennese composer’s great gifts. The absolute high point is occupied by the Symphony WV 393; with its »loud jubilation, laughing joy« it realizes the characteristics of its key as defined by C. F. Daniel Schubart. These new jewels in the crown of preclassical music are interpreted by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra under Johannes Goritzki.
