Vol. 2 of our quartet edition with the Schuppanzigh Quartet features selected works by Ferdinand Ries underscoring the great significance of this composer. Ries once again proves to be a master and, as we today now see, a trailblazing composer very much worth rediscovering. Throughout his life the Beethoven pupil Ries occupied himself with the composition of string quartets, but it was not until 1816 that he presented three quartets to the public in his op. 70. Of the three, it is the String Quartet op. 70, 2 recorded here, classicistic and cheerfully optimistic in tone, that most closely adheres to tradition. Twenty years passed before Ries composed the String Quartet WoO 48, a work in which he employs large-format units with a lot of surprising modulations and harmonies – instead of the traditional dramaturgy of the sonata cycle. With its renderings of interesting new discoveries the Schuppanzigh Quartet has earned renown as one of today's leading string quartets performing on original instruments. Once again it interprets these individual and suspenseful quartets »with élan and devotion« (FonoForum 3 / 06 of Vol. 1).
