Alkan: Music For Organ Or Pedal-Piano
Alkan’s reputation as a pianist is legendary; his compositions for this instrument even surpass Liszt’s transcendental piano artistry. What is less well known is that in 1834, at the age of twenty, he won first prize in organ performance at the Paris Conservatory; however, no further performances on this instrument are known to have taken place.
He was described as a “mysterious composer.” He was already a legend during his lifetime, and his contemporaries viewed his genius and lifestyle with a mixture of wonder and consternation. He was enigmatic, obsessive, puritanical, and reclusive, and did little to promote his own compositions. After his death, a revival was out of the question, as many of his best pieces had not even been heard.
Nevertheless, it seems incredible that compositions such as the masterful and uplifting works on this recording had to wait a quarter-century to reach the public. This long silence certainly has nothing to do with the quality of the music.
Works:
• Alkan: Treize Prières, Op. 64
• Alkan: Petits Préludes sur les Huit Gammes de Plainchant
• Alkan: Impromptu on Luther's 'Un fort rempart est notre Dieu, Op. 69
