Although hardly known today, Charles-Simon Catel's Les Bayadères (1810) is one of his most important stage works. The work was successful against Spontini's La Vestale and also enjoyed great popularity outside France. None other than the young Hector Berlioz was enthusiastic about the work when he arrived in Paris in 1822. The story set in India requires numerous musical exoticisms, but the opera captivates especially with its masterfully formed scenes at the end of the acts.
