This double CD introduces works written by Franz Schmidt for the one-armed pianist Paul Wittgenstein. Alhough he had a comprehensive education in piano and cello, Franz Schmidt was basically self-taught as a composer. Schmidt belongs –unlike his contemporary Schoenberg and his circle – to the many composers of the period between the two World Wars who made up-to-date statements and modern conceptions, without rejecting the traditions of the 19th century.
