What does Wieland Kuijken, one of the Oldlassics 12298) nor as pleasantly self-sufficient as Roel Dieltiens' (Accent 9171/72); it should therefore be regarded as a supplement rather than a substitute for these two reference recordings. • The third CD, on which Wieland Kuijken and his son Piet recorded the three sonatas for harpsichord and viola da gamba, is incredibly exciting for connoisseurs of the history of interpretation. By the way in which the vertical is emphasized here and how the gesture seems to revolve around its own axis, one is inevitably reminded of the early 1970s, in which Wieland Kuijken together with his brothers Sigiswald and Bart and with Gustav Leonhardt pointing the way and style-defining occurred. Time seems to have gone over this unjustly purist approach, but it is good to be reminded once again today of fundamental problems in performance practice. Unfortunately, the recording technique has artificially pulled apart the harpsichord's left and right hands, presumably to make it clear that the harpsichord plays two completely Forders of early music, have to say about this subject? His very personal foreword is worth reading, in which he confesses that even after forty years he no longer knows how Baroque music sounded at the time, rather than at the beginning of his preoccupation with this subject. And this sincerity now runs through his interpretation, in which less the knowledge than the questions of an impressive life experience stuck. You can hear Kuijken working off Bach's suites, trying to get to the bottom of things. He seems to be driven by curiosity rather than sour thinking or dark age pessimism, and that distinguishes him beneficially from all those musicians who poach all possible and even more impossible things into Bach's works. Wieland Kuijken's interpretation is neither as unpretentiously self-confident as Pieter Wispelwey's (Channel Cindependent voices.
