When Haydn's last high mass, the so-called Harmoniemesse, was premiered in the Bergkirche in Eisenstadt on 8 September 1802, it happened in front of an illustrious audience. The instrumentation of the wind instruments (1 flute, two oboes each, clarinets, bassoon, horns and trumpets), which at the time was perceived as unusually rich, gave the work the nickname "Harmoniemesse" (Harmony Mass) to distinguish it from Haydn's other Masses in B flat major. In turning away from the early operatic style and the fusion of all symphonic and vocal possibilities of the time, this work is one of the highlights of mass composition at all and has exerted a significant influence on Beethoven's Missa solemnis and Schubert's masses
