Three years before the Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, Felix Mendelssohn wrote an astonishing concerto for (forte) piano and violin which, although based on a classical model, is brimming with new, groundbreaking ideas. Of course, when the work was first performed in 1823, the composer was only ... fourteen years old! And he had already composed close to a hundred works - including a piano concerto that had been premiered a year earlier. It would take until the end of the 20th century before they were available in a critical edition, on which this recording is based.
