Over a period of seven years, from 1819 to 1826, Franz Schubert composed and revised his fifth mass, probably the most songlike and inventive of his works in this genre. The integration of the soloists and the choir, the masterly flow of harmony and the idiomatic treatment of the woodwinds give this mass a symphonic quality that later inspired Anton Bruckner. Schubert himself was also convinced of the high quality of this composition and described it as the best of his six Latin masses.
In the setting of selected versikelaus from the Magnificat, echoes of Haydn can be perceived, inspired by the joyful, expressive mood of creation.
