:On 10 February 1638, Louis XIII swore in Saint-Germain-en Laye to dedicate his life, his empire, his crown and his subjects to the Virgin Mary in future. From now on, the pious oath was to be commemorated with a festive service on Assumption Day. Olivier Schneebeli has put together a programme that evokes the ceremonies and the glamour of the celebrations. At the centre of this is the Mass for double choir by Nicolas Formé (1567-1638), whose music Louis XIII appreciated so much that he stored the music in a special cabinet to which only he had the key. The no less precious setting around this jewel, along with two other double-choir motets by Formé, motets by his contemporaries Guillaume Bouzignac, Antoine Boesset and Étienne Moulinié, impressively demonstrate the musical splendour at the French court. And this before Louis XIV!
