Aude Heurtematte - organy historyczne St-Gervais, Paris • For 174 years the Couperin family held the post of organist at the Parisian church of St. Gervais: Louis Couperin, who was also the first important composer in the family, was succeeded by his younger brother Charles after his death in 1661. Charles died in 1678, too early to bequeath the office in direct line to his son François, then 10 years old. Michel Richard Delalande, the mentor of the highly talented François, stepped in as interim organist until François himself, an outstanding organ virtuoso, took up his post in 1685 at the age of 17. In 1690 he published his two organ masses, probably with a view to another post, which he received three years later: At the age of 25 he became court organist of the Sun King at the castle chapel of Versailles in addition to his position at St. Gervais. He also worked as a music teacher for the royal family. The Couperins remained organists at St. Gervais until 1826 • The organ of the Couperins was renovated and enlarged in 1768 by the famous organ builder François-Henri Clicquot and has remained largely intact in this form to this day. Aude Heurtematte now holds the organist position at St. Gervais and has naturally used the organ of the Couperins for this recording.
