The American Fine Arts Quartet was one of the best-known American string quartets until it was dissolved in 1979. In addition to the classical masterpieces of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, the repertoire also included numerous contributions to the genre by American composers, which were often premiered by the ensemble. Most of the ensemble's commercial recordings are long gone, but archive tapes on Chicago broadcaster WFMT were recently discovered. The American label Music & Arts is now bringing these recordings in a carefully edited 8 CD box with a new commentary by the second violinist Abraham Loft.
