The sonatas in Volume 5 were part of a set of six published in 1780 and dedicated to the sisters Caterina and Marianna Auenbrugger, both proficient young players, admired by Leopold Mozart. Not all these works were newly written, and this shows in the writing; but their clear layout is obviously designed to attract talented amateurs. The opening movement of No. 49 and the memorable Largo e sostenuto of No. 50 (and its infectious finale) show Jandó in top form; in the other works his bright, stylish playing is always responsive to Haydn’s direct, lively manner. We underrated this disc on its first appearance. The recording is well up to the high standard of this series.. • Penguin Guide, January 2009
