Today we are used to experiencing the two choirs of Bach's St. Matthew Passion side by side. However, the listeners of the premiere in Leipzig's Thomaskirche in 1736 were offered a much more impressive listening experience. The main event of the Passion's history took place on the organ gallery, but the second choir was placed on the so-called "swallow's nest" gallery 28 metres away in front of the choir room, which was later demolished. René Jacobs' new recording takes up this insight and does not present Bach's great Passion in a "stereophonic" right-left constellation, so to speak, but tries to depict the "front and back" of the premiere situation. But René Jacobs wouldn't be himself if he hadn't succeeded in making a very contemporary, gripping, touching and artistically unique recording beyond these historical questions. Bach's St. Matthew Passion accompanied him throughout his life: first as a choirboy in Ghent, then as a countertenor and finally as a conductor. He has never stopped dealing with Bach's immense creation, its musical, but also its spiritual and theological dimensions. And the way he unites all the participants behind his idea of a simultaneously intimate, theatrical and collective drama makes him once again one of the most exciting interpreters of "early music".
