Kris Defoort (*1959) has an unusual artistic career: Coming from baroque music, he studied jazz and composition in Liège before he was consecrated to the New York jazz scene and returned to Belgium in 1991, where he has been shaping the Belgian jazz scene ever since. The music of the Belgian avant-garde jazz pianist and composer for his opera, based on the book of the same name by Yasunari Kawabata, can probably best be described as modern verism. FUGA LIBERA publishes here a live recording of the memorable performances of spring 2009 at the Théatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. It is the prelude to a whole series of recordings with works by the composer.
