With the European Concerts, the Berliner Philharmoniker have wanted to commemorate their founding day every May 1 since 1991 and at the same time set an example for the common cultural heritage of the Old World. The concerts are not necessarily performed under the respective artistic director, but often with those guest conductors who are particularly close to the orchestra's heart. Among them is Mariss Jansons, who conducted the 2001 European concert at the Irena Church in Istanbul. Jansons is able to approach music from a varying distance, which is something that particularly distinguishes him. In Istanbul, he succeeded especially in the Symphonie fantastique, where the work's sparkling details came into their own just as much as the decisive, large-scale contrasts.
