Sublime poetic texts dating from the 14th century and highly original instruments (qanbûs lute and copper plate percussion) inspire the Singing of Sanaa, the quintessence of Yemenite traditional music, in classic themes of courtly love, nostalgia and absence. Al-'Ajamî is a sublime vocalist and a master exponent of the lute, and is perhaps the last musician still able to perform in the ancient tradition. The music, comprising three long suites, gives us a good example of what Arab music must have been like at the beginning of the Islamic era. This is a re-issue of C560173 originally released in 2003.
