Although Prokofiev had already written two symphonies as a student, his first numbered work of this genre was the "Classical Symphony", which he completed in 1917.
Melodically, if not harmonically, it evokes the world of Haydn and Mozart and has always remained one of his most popular works.
Quite differently his second, which he himself called "iron and steel" and which, with its conscious modernity and almost physical power, illustrates Scriabin's early influences on Prokofiev.
