David McVicar's captivating production of Le nozze di Figaro is set in post-revolutionary France in the 1830s, where the inexorable disintegration of the old order has provoked strong feelings of loss.
In the relationship between Finley's suave, dashingly egocentric Count and Röschmann's passionately dignified Countess, which forms the tragic core of the opera, the sexy lightness between a spirited Figaro (Erwin Schrott) and a sassy Susanna (Miah Persson) is completely absent, while the stubborn spark between Marcellina (Graciela Araya) and Bartolo (Jonathan Veira) hints at what could be rekindled.
The production is superbly complemented by the beauty of Paule Constable's lighting and Tanya McCallin's evocative set design. Antonio Pappano conducts (and accompanies the recitatives) with invigorating wit and emotional depth.
