The Latin wisdom "Inter arma silent Musae" ("Between the weapons the muses are silent") has not stopped several military men in the course of musical history from also being successful composers. Captain Tobias Hume (ca. 1569-1645) may be an example of this exception to the rule. His works for viola da gamba and lyra violl are without doubt among the best ever written for these instruments. Bruno Cocset and his ensemble Les Basses Reúnies welcome Guido Balestracci (Lyra Viol), one of the leading virtuosos on the viola da gamba and lyra viol, for their recording with ALPHA. Incidentally, the continuo features two different harpsichords (one with metal strings, the other with gut strings) and a large bass viol in G.
