A little more than ten years ago I discovered the late work of Gabriel Fauré, especially his magnificent cycle La chanson d'Ève. A decade later, I am still exploring with the same pleasure the expressive lushness of these songs and their intoxicating harmonic density. Despite the formal complexity of the cycle, I clearly feel a kinship with this universe, with the wide range of precisely described sensations, from innocence to death, with so much beauty, sensuality and so much physical and mystical depth. • From the symbolist universe of Charles Van Lerberghe's poems, Fauré received the ideal colours for a wonderful sonority: songs such as Soir or Le parfum impérissable already show what distinguishes Fauré's great songs and of which La chanson d'Ève is in some ways the end point. Few French singers dare to engage in this difficult (and yet so rewarding) exercise, presenting and defending it as the culmination of the mélodie, combining the sense of the overall design with that of the detail Karine Deshayes.
