description
This one-act opera by Felix Weingartner is based on the plot of Terakoya, much like the piece’s sister composition, Carl Orff’s Gisei. Die Dorfschule was composed in 1916, and the plot centers around the Japanese drama of a village school where an official must sacrifice his own son to save his lord’s son. Although this work is one of Weingartner’s least known accomplishments, he had a very successful musical career. He was the first conductor to commercially record all of Beethoven’s symphonies, and the second to record the Brahms symphonies.
