The Third Symphony was written between March and May 1951 and played by the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra under the composer in a studio performance broadcast on 26 June 1952. The symphony is scored for three flutes (third doubling piccolo), two oboes (second doubling cor anglais), two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, percussion (one player: cymbals, triangle, tam-tam, glockenspiel, side drum, bass drum) and strings.
