Our second homage to Dieterich (sic!) Buxtehude, to whom universal tribute is being paid this year, takes the form of a new release featuring festively and fully set cantatas and motets of Concerto character in interpretations by Roland Wilson's Capella Ducale – with most of these performances representing recording premieres. In 1646 Franz Tunder, Buxtehude's predecessor, had begun performing sacred works during the Luebeck Abendmusiken (sacred evening concerts) sponsored by the city's merchants. Buxtehude himself was very successful as a musical entrepreneur: during most years he secured sufficient funds for these magnificent concerts, and they quickly gained renown beyond Luebeck's boundaries. During other years the Abendmusiken featured festive cantatas on the large instrumental and vocal scale – such as those presented on this CD
