opis
This year the musical world commemorates the German-Danish composer Dietrich Buxtehude, who died 300 years ago. Even outside special magazines, i.e. in normal daily and weekly newspapers, large commemorative articles about the otherwise relatively unnoticed appear. His life stations are quickly told: born 1637 in Helsingborg, trained from father to organist, then positions in Helsingör and his native city and then from 1668 the important office of organist at St. Marien in Lübeck. Bach, Handel and many others pilgrimaged to him; he was a great musician of his time. His organ music shows him as an ingenious fantasist, his vocal music (certainly only very reducedly preserved) more than tender, intimate Pietists
Manfred Cordes has written the great cantata "Wacht! Euch zum Streit", which may have been part of the Lübecker Abendmusiken, was streamlined to CD length in order to bring the dramatic elements more to the fore. A wonderful tribute to Buxtehude.
