Immersion in the mysteries of the Passion
• In 1680, Dietrich Buxtehude, organist at St. Mary's Church in Lübeck, composed an unusual piece of Passion music: seven cantatas combine meditative reflections on the limbs of the suffering Jesus Christ. Buxtehude dedicated the Membra Jesu Nostri to his "revered friend Gustav Düben", the court conductor of the Swedish king. The work was probably first performed in the German church in Stockholm, which was also the court church. Even today, this musical prayer, the text of which goes back to a rhymed Passion prayer by the 13th century Cistercian monk Arnulf von Löwen, immediately moves listeners with its deeply religious mood.
