A remarkable manuscript from the 15th century, now preserved in Naples, contains a cycle of six splendid parody masses about the chanson L'homme armé. This cycle seems like a treatise on polyphonic compositional technique and is without doubt one of the most important masterpieces of the Renaissance. The apparently magnificent illustrations were unfortunately lost, so that we do not know who the author of the six masses is, but quite a few musicologists assume that these are no less than Antoine Busnois (around 1432-1492), one of the leading musical personalities at the Burgundian court of Charles the Bold. For their recording, Giuseppe Maletto and Cantica Symphonia selected the sixth of the masses and inserted instrumental contrafacts from the other five masses between the parts of the masses.
