Poulenc wrote his Stabat Mater, which he himself called a "Requiem without despair," in 1950. He composed it in memory of Christian Bérard, a famous figure in 1940s Paris who, among other things, designed sets for films and plays by John Cocteau. This masterful work, dedicated to the Black Madonna of Rocamadour, gives the choir a crucial role and stands in a direct lineage with the grands motets of the time of Louis XIV. Upon completing the composition, Poulenc wrote to Pierre Bernac: "It is good because it is perfectly authentic."
