Wölfl, a pupil of father and son Mozart, had great success as an opera composer in Vienna, wrote a lot of music for the fortepiano (in a piano duel he even defeated Beethoven, according to the audience present) and was not unfaithful to the instrument of his youth, the violin. Inspired by the great success of the Quatuor concertant, which Ignaz Pleyel composed in Paris by the dozen and scattered among the music-loving citizenry, Wölfl also wrote string quartets in this style. Pieces which, thanks to their seemingly simple, clear structure and melodious arrangement, the beautiful sequences, are a delight for both the performers and the audience.
