After the complete recording of all cantatas by Matthias Weckmann (1619-1674), published on RIC 216, RICERCAR thankfully also recreates the no less meritorious recording of chamber music works and songs. Weckmann's sonatas for four instruments were most likely intended for the concerts of the Collegium Musicum in Hamburg, where the Hamburg musicians, among others, heard the latest developments in the field of instrumental music from Vienna and Venice. His piano music, on the other hand, is under the influence of Froberger and, with its French and Italian stylistic elements, represents another important link to the piano music of Johann Sebastian Bach. A look at the cast list of the ensembles La Fenice and Ricercar Consort on both CDs reveals with Christina Pluhar, Enrico Gatti, Philippe Pierlot and Vincent Dumestre are nothing less than today's elite of early music.
