Imre Széchényi spent his entire life composing, even though he had plenty of other things to do. As Austro-Hungarian ambassador, he represented the interests of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in imperial Berlin during a turbulent period, after diplomatic missions had taken him first to Rome, Stockholm, Brussels, Paris and St. Petersburg. Bismarck's infamous Dreikaiserbund bears Széchényi's signature, and he was also instrumental in the Berlin Congo Conference. His worldliness is reflected in his songs, which, with this commendable new recording, can probably be heard again for the first time in a very long time.
