Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812) was long regarded (without closer examination) as a mass producer of market-tailored serenade music who distinguished himself much more in his capacity as a music publisher than as a composer in his own right. Mozart and Haydn had a very different view of this matter: both held Hoffmeister in very great esteem as a composer and often entrusted him with arrangements of their own works. To be sure, our recording contains entertaining music; after all, that was what serenades and divertimentos were all about. However, everything is marked by high compositional mastery and a great wealth of imagination. Here one special treat surely comes in the form of the »Ankunfts- und Abschieds-Parthia.« • The Consortium Classicum (how could it be otherwise?) once again proves to be a brilliant advocate on behalf of this rediscovered treasure. • Press Reviews Musik & Theater: »He who was able to sell his works under Haydn’s noble name, with the result that they even found their way into the Hoboken catalogue, must have composed just as well as Haydn. Hoffmeister’s serenades are in fact magnificent musical gems, with melodic richness of audience appeal. Virtuosic facility and Mozartian depth as well as elegance and performance joy balance each other, and wittiness and waggishness are likewise not lacking in the highly resourceful Hoffmeister.« • G. Schließ in FonoForum 6 / 94: »Finely crafted creations in the spirit of Mozart and Haydn.«
