Franz Xaver who? Franz Xaver Sterkel! While today even musical insiders shake their heads ignorantly at this name, his contemporaries were full of praise. His symphonies were a big hit at Le Concert Spirituel in Paris, Beethoven really wanted to get to know him personally, Carl Maria von Weber talks about a visit to the "famous Sterkel" and his song compositions even had an influence on Schubert. Nobody knows why it has almost completely disappeared from the musical scene. This will certainly change with the present recording of his violin sonatas, which are performed by Els Biesemans and Meret Lüthi.
