In his day Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) was a great pianist and well-known conductor. With his wide-ranging, Brahms-like Piano Concerto No. 1, he was already able to achieve an early success. After many years of varying success as a composer, he found his individual language in the remarkable Second Piano Concerto. Originally planned as a one-movement concerto, this cheerful and lighthearted romantic masterpiece was the starting point for his Serenade op. 3 and Symphony No. 2. The award-winning pianist Niklas Sivelöv also recorded Stenhammar's works for solo piano.
Niklas Sivelöv is a professor at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen. He was the first Swedish pianist to be invited to Steinway's "Hall of Fame", received the Diapason d'Or (for Berwald's piano concerto), a nomination for the Cannes Classical Award for the best recording of 20th century music (Einar Englund's piano concerto no. 1) and other awards.
