The Gould Piano Trio and David Adams play Stanford's Piano Quartet No. 2 as world premiere recording.
The musical talent of the Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford was encouraged by his parents at an early age. He studied organ in Cambridge and, while working as an organist and choirmaster, was also given the opportunity to continue his studies in Leipzig and Berlin. Through the advocacy and encouragement of Joseph Joachim he achieved a meteoric rise. He wrote symphonies and numerous sacred choral works, which also made him a central figure in the Anglican Church.
He regarded chamber music as an important "representative" of "absolute music", which is reflected in his productivity and inventiveness. The extensive and lyrical Piano Trio No. 1, which Stanford dedicated to the great Hans von Bülow, exudes both power and elegance.
The Piano Quartet No. 2 remained unpublished even after Stanford's death in 1924 and was only revived in 2010 by the Gould Trio
