"Originally released in 1987 on the Marco Polo label, this Franz Schreker collection makes a welcome reappearance on Naxos. Edgar Seipenbusch conducts atmospheric and idiomatic performances of all five works, aided by wonderfully colorful playing from the Slovak Philharmonic. Seipenbusch carefully recreates the unique sound world of each piece, from the passionate Wagnerian outpourings of the Ekkehard Overture and the dreamlike opening of Die Gezeichneten (where the Slovak strings create a beautiful shimmer, making you wish for the entire opera), to Das Spielwerk's briefly ecstatic ruminations. The Fantastic Overture dances energetically (and exotically), while the Der Schatzgraber interlude swoons in its self-indulgent late-romanticism. The clear, warmly reverberant recorded sound is well suited to Schreker's orchestral style (though for some reason Der Schatzgraber plays at a lower level than the rest of the program).
