The very successful NAXOS series with Franz's great late romantic symphonies Schmidt reaches its climax with this episode. The Fourth Symphony was composed after his death of Schmidt's daughter Emma, who suddenly and unexpectedly after the birth of her first child and was called "Requiem for My Daughter" by the composer himself is called.
The variations on a hussar song are reminiscent of similar works by Brahms and Reger, but are testimony to Schmidt's sensitive handling of the great Orchestra.
