opis
in 1799, the Italian composer Antonio Salieri set William Shakespeare's comedy "The Merry Wives of Windsor" to music. Salieri's music for "Falstaff" is without doubt one of his most original works - elements of Italian opera buffa and seria as well as German Singspiel are convincingly interwoven, a sophisticated choice of instruments and numerous expressive solo parts testify to the talent of the composer, who was far too often overshadowed by Mozart. A masterpiece without equal. This recording of Michael Hampe's production of "Falstaff" from the 1995 Schwetzingen Festival is in no way inferior to the success of the opera at its premiere in Vienna almost 200 years ago. Carlo Prospero Defranceschi's libretto reduces the original piece to just a few leading roles, giving the soloists John Del Carlo, Teresa Ringholz, Richard Croft and Delores Ziegler more space to interpret their singing. Arnold Östman conducts the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra.
