"For me, Gounod is the greatest French musician of the 19th century and is in no way inferior to Berlioz. And 'Mireille' is undoubtedly his masterpiece, an opera of such poignant simplicity that the conventions of the genre have to step back to let pure emotion take precedence. It was an honour for me to include this work in the repertoire of the Opéra de Paris, where it had never been performed before ... I consider myself lucky to work with Marc Minkowski in this production, a conductor who not only loves this music, but also understands its brilliance and depth (Nicolas Joel, director of the Paris Opera)
