Gounod: Romeo & Juliette
On April 27, 1867, "Romeo and Juliette" premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. For Gounod, it was the second artistic triumph of his life. "Romeo and Juliette" became even more popular than "Faust" and soon conquered international audiences. Thanks to modern camera and microphone technology, it is now relatively easy to film even larger stage productions of the opera live. "Opera as film" is an art form in its own right. It requires greater technical effort – absolutely comparable to a real film set – and, above all, considerably more dynamic. The camera is more agile and allows for a variety of rapidly changing perspectives. For her film based on a slightly shortened version of the opera, director Barbara Willis Sweete relocated the action to the picturesque medieval royal castle of Zvíkov in the Czech Republic. The real-life "dream couple" Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna have been among the leading figures in the opera world since 1996. Their joint debut at the New York Met took place in 1998 with Gounod's "Roméo et Juliette" and was a triumph for the then newlywed couple.
