The story of the beautiful king's daughter Sémélé, who, through Juno's intrigue, demands that Jupiter show himself in his divine form to her and does not survive, is familiar to many music lovers through Handel's secular oratorio. 17 years earlier the subject had already been set to music by Marin Marais. The music can most easily be described as wonderful and one really does not know what to rave about more, the magnificent choral scenes, the intimate airs or the stirring dances. Hervé Niquet once again dispels the often-read misconception that there would have been no major operas between Lully and Rameau in France.
