The Fantasy for Gamba Ensemble is a highlight of English music. Between the beginning of the 16th and the end of the 17th century hundreds of these "Fancies" were created, the greatest masters of the time like Byrd, Gibbons, Lawes, Locke left behind admirable compositions of this genre. The young Purcell wrote these completed works, comparable to Bach's Musical Offering and the Art of the Fugue, in the certainty that no contemporary would be interested in them.
