A new aesthetic requires new forms: That is the challenge the composer took on in the two works presented here. With "Les Nuits d'été," Berlioz was a pioneer of the song cycle genre for voice and orchestra long before Mahler and Ravel. "Harold en Italie" for large orchestra and solo viola - Niccolò Paganini had commissioned a viola concerto from Berlioz - was an experiment with the symphonic genre.

The French orchestra Les Siècles, conducted by François-Xavier Roth, performs on period instruments. With violist Tabea Zimmermann and baritone Stéphane Degout, two exceptional soloists have been engaged. "Les Nuits d'été" is heard for the first time in the version for baritone and orchestra. A special prelude to the Berlioz Year 2019!
