The complete liturgical cycle of Lamentations consists of nine readings sung during Holy Week (three per day on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday). The readings are based on biblical texts from the Book of Jeremiah.
The significance of the services during Holy Week, and especially these three days (the "Holy Triduum"), in the liturgy of the Counter-Reformation prompted most composers of the time to attempt setting such texts to music.
Among the composers who set famous cycles of Lamentations for Holy Week are Genet detto Carpentras (composer to the Papal Chapel), Brumel, the English composer Thomas Tallis, Jacobus Gallus from Slovenia, the German composer Orlando di Lasso, and the Spaniard Tomás Luis de Victoria.
